79CXR was opened in April 1994 by Robert & Graham, two gay guys who had been employed by the Bass Corporation, the main gay bar operators in London. They had previously spent four years building up the business of "Brief Encounter" for Bass, from a small operation to the most successful operation in the whole of the company's 4000 sites, gay or straight! Still in employment, they launched "Halfway to Heaven" as their second site. Once again it became an instant success. Eventually, becoming somewhat disillusioned by the attitude of Bass, they decided to cut out and start a bar that truly valued its customers.
So the concept of 79CXR was born in early 1993. (The name, in case you haven't realised, is simply short for 79 Charing Cross Road - well, some people don't get it, honest!)
The idea was that the bar would be 'friendly' and free of the posy and annoying 'attitude' that is so noticeable in so many gay venues (the owners and staff are cool, gorgeous, stylish and so much more important than you, the boring customer!) Well, in 1994, we actually made it - 79CXR opened with a bang! It had all the features we wanted - over 3000 square feet of space, a fantastic Mezzanine Level allowing customers to view the evening's "talent", the Main Ground Floor Bar with high ceilings providing a "buzzy" atmosphere, in addition to a quieter seated area and an Intermediate upper level providing a balance between the two.

The Beaver Hotel is one of those fantastic places in London, where Trans-gendered girls can book a room and while in “Girl Mode”, come and go as freely as they wish, irrespective of how they are dressed.
The hotel is on Philbeach Gardens, about 150 meters from the famous Philbeach Hotel, another popular Gay and Trans-gendered establishment. It’s on a quiet tree lined street with some uneven paving stones, so take care when walking in heels. At night, the street is relatively dimly lit, so girls who are not too confident about going out in public can do so at ease. It’s likely if heading for the Philbeach Hotel during the evening, you will only have to pass one or two people on their way home to one of the many flats that also line Philbeach Gardens, many of whom have seen T Girls on various occasions and never bother to raise an eyebrow.
The hotel itself is adequate for a night or two, perhaps longer, but don’t expect the same level of comfort as places like the Hilton or Savoy! The hotel is actually two properties converted into one and that reflects in the room numbering scheme. Rooms tend to be on the small side and it’s always worth booking well in advance as it’s usually very heavily booked. The en-suite rooms are obviously best for Trans-gendered Girls where there is usually good lighting for applying make up. It’s usual also, to have a large mirror in the room so you can take time to admire ones beauty before heading off out. The beds are usually a bit on the uncomfortable side but for the ability to come and go in girls’ mode, it’s a small price to pay. Room rates vary subject to what you want and start at around £38 per night, including breakfast for a single room.
Geoff Llewellyn has been the owner of the box since it opened in 1993.Realising that at the time of opening, there was a serious lack of up-market bars catering for the gay market, he saw the opportunity for a successful business venture .And he wasn’t wrong! The venue became swamped, and soon had a strong core of regular customers which they have retained to this day. Indeed the box was at the forefront of the London café bar revolution that took the city by storm in the early1990’s.
Initially trading from two floors, café upstairs by day, bar downstairs at night, the box team soon realised that their customers preferred the light and airy feel of the ground floor where they could see and be seen by day or night. It was therefore decided that the lower floor should be adapted to accommodate the utilities : kitchen, beer cellar, office and a ‘first’ on the gay scene: unisex toilets! This left the ground floor with double its original customer space and by choosing furniture that was easy to stack and store, the space can adapt for laid back eating during the day and full on party mode at night.
The box crew wanted to retain a high presence, and most importantly to avoid any shady connotations. Think back to the days when the gay scene was awash with dark pubs and clubs, devoid of windows, where its visitors sought anominity. The exact opposite is the case at the box. With its large glass frontage, those inside can watch the activity of the street whilst also becoming highly watchable themselves.
And so the box has become a platform to see and be seen. A place to perform and a place to spectate. The whole format of the venue ensures that it attracts a very mixed crowd, which changes as the trading day progresses. Professionals, theatre, film and media types enjoying the food and drinks as the box day begins with the atmosphere noticeably changing with the influx of the post-work drinking brigade and at weekends the pre-clubbing crowd.
On your own or with a group you are always welcome at the box and this friendly attitude is clearly visible both day and night. Whilst there is undoubtedly an abundance of regular faces, there is no sense of intimidation for the newcomer. Frequently full with this good looking friendly crowd Geoff Llewellyn sums the atmosphere up by stating ‘A busy box is a happy box!!!!’

Wall-mounted lube and tissue dispensers are provided, plus free condoms are available upstairs at the bar.
CHANGING
We have excellent changing facilities for girls who can’t arrive dressed. The changing room is on the floor above the club so that t-girls can change in private without having to walk through the club itself. Numbered bags for street clothes and valuables are provided (for a cloakroom fee of £1) and will be kept secure behind the bar. T-girls can arrive from 2.00pm to change. Club opens at 3.00pm.

James was there as barman and it was just like old times. Jade from the Philbeach runs it and was in attendance. We were made very welcome.
